Japanese delegation visits Cochin Port

KOCHI: A delegation of experts from the Ocean Policy Research Foundation, Tokyo, visited the Cochin Port Trust on Thursday and held discussions with the Port Trust Chairman, N. Ramachandran, and senior officials on the maritime development projects at the Port.

The Union Ministry of Shipping facilitated the visit as a sequel to the Experts’ Conference on Japan-India Maritime Economic Cooperation held in Tokyo in February this year. Apart from Kochi, the team will also visit he ports at Chennai, Visakhapatnam and Tuticorin as well as the Cochin Shipyard. The current visit of the experts is aimed at observing and assessing the potentials of the four ports in the southern coast of India from their specific viewpoints of shipping, civil engineering and logistics.

A report by the experts and proposals on practical measures for betterment of port facilities will be provided as an informative reference for the Japanese maritime industry, which is attentive to India as a promising business frontier, said a press release.

The team from Japan comprised Yutaka Fukushima, Deputy Senior Researcher, Overseas Coastal Area Development Institute of Japan; Keiji Iwata, Deputy General Manager, Dry Bulk Carrier Supervising Office, Mitsui OSK Lines Ltd.; Shinichi Oi, General Manager, Marine Technical Department, Marine Consulting Ltd.; Yoshihisa Imai, Senior Research Fellow, Ocean Policy Research Foundation; and Takehisa Imaizumi, Advisor, Policy Group, Ocean Policy Research Foundation.

The expert team is accompanied by P. Sasikumar and J. P. Saini, Under Secretaries, Ministry of Shipping, Government of India.
