Kakinada: Union Minister of State for Defence M.M. Pallam Raju inaugurated a passport mela at the JNTU Engineering College grounds here on Saturday. He said there was a substantial number of people in the district who were looking for study and job opportunities abroad. The Minister for External Affairs Pranab Mukherjee has consented to the organising of mela in Kakinada in view of its potential for development. Passports would be issued to eligible persons within 15 days after their applications were scrutinised and other criteria examined. Social Welfare Minister Pilli Subhas Chandra Bose suggested to the Union Minister to strive for opening of American Consulate in Hyderabad. A total of six counters were set up at the venue. Separate counters were opened by banks to issue drafts. The Postal Department has set up counters to issue passport applications on the spot and stamp papers. MLAs Mutha Gopalakrishna, A Bullabbai Reddy and P Dorababu, Zilla Parishad chairman Ch Venugopala Krishna, Collector Gopalakrishna Dwivedi, OSD (Police) PHD Ramakrishna, DRO M Mohan Raj and others were present.
