A start: Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Kumar Pandey inaugurating a function to celebrate World Tourism Day at Sahyadri Science College in Shimoga on Saturday. SHIMOGA: Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Kumar Pandey said here on Saturday that there was a need to spread awareness on tourism-related issues among all sections of the society. Mr. Pandey was speaking after inaugurating the World Tourism Day Celebration-2008 held at the Sahyadri Science College under auspices of its Department of Tourism Administration. He said tourism involved study of cultural and traditional heritage. Mr. Pandey opined that if tourism industry had not developed in the country it was because of sheer lack of interest to utilise the tremendous potential that the sector offers. In other placesMr Pandey said in the U.S. for instance tourism industry was flourishing because of the effective utilisation of resources to attract tourists from far off and near. Awareness in tourism-related issues can help India realise the full potential the sector offers, Mr Pandey said. Inviting students to participate in activities held for the purpose of promoting tourism, he said tours should not be conducted only with a purpose of visiting interesting scenic spots. But, they should also involve students in the study of places of general interest. Principal In-charge of the college N.S. Pushpalatha presided over the function. The former principal of the college, T.S. Hoovaiah Gowda, was the chief guest. The Assistant Director of State Tourism Department, S.K. Hussaini, and the convener of ‘Namma Kanasina Shimoga’, N. Gopinath were present. Earlier, the co-ordinator of the Department of Tourism Administration, R. Rajeshwari, welcomed the gathering. Shashidhar proposed a vote of thanks. The college held debate, essay writing and quiz competitions on tourism related topics.
