Clocks from another time

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: Clocks serve a functional purpose in every drawing room. But, before the nondescript digital clocks took centre stage in our homes, clocks were also pieces of art.

They came in sturdy wooden cases, often embellished by carvings. Renaissance Grandfathers’ Clock Gallery on Lalbagh Fort Road is currently exhibiting 30 varieties of grandfather clocks which are inspired by the old models, but use modern material. The clocks are six to eight feet tall with designs carved on the hood or bonnet.

The biggest among them, called “Almighty”, is over nine feet tall.

Its pendulum is plated in 22 carat gold. The exhibition at K.K. Complex, Second Floor, Near Lalbagh main gate, Lalbagh Fort Road, will be on till October 8.
