Unisun Publications announces awards for writers above 18 years of age The cash awards in various categories total Rs. 1.5 lakh Bangalore: Reliance Timeout’s Book Club continues to serve up regular offerings of book-related activities. In association with Unisun Publications, it consistently brings to audiences everything from poetry-readings to small doses of theatre. On Saturday afternoon at the Reliance Timeout on Cunningham Road, in a packed session of many events, the Book Club team announced the launch of its writing awards, inviting entries in three categories — poetry, short fiction and children’s fiction. Open till December 31, 2008, entries can be sent by all those above 18 years of age. Winners of the competition will get the chance to have their books published by Unisun, as well as win cash awards totalling Rs. 1.5 lakh in all three categories. Reliance will also retail the books at its stores providing a complete platform to budding writers. Prize-giving ceremonyAlso part of the afternoon’s itinerary was the prize-giving ceremony to last year’s winners in all three genres — who were from all age groups and represented diverse voices. Winning the first place in the short-fiction category was Salil Chaturvedi for his story “Music of the Stars.” Bridget A. Raju won the first place for “The Backyard Ballet” in the poetry category and Khyrunissa won the first place in the Children’s Fiction Category for “Absent-Minded Madhu.” Theatrepersons Jagadish Raja and Kumar Sampat Iyengar read out prize-winning short stories from the year before last. The afternoon also marked the release of the collection of poetry “Mosaic” featuring the winners of the poetry competition. Poet and author Anjum Hasan released the book and read out her poems, while some of the winners such as Gerlalyn Pinto read out her poems too. K.R. Usha, C.K. Meena and David Vasnaik, judges of Unisun’s past writing competitions, spoke to the audience about various aspects of the entries, ranging from word limit to the use of profanities.
