Manipal Hospital organises celebration for its patients

Hale and hearty: Children who underwent heart surgery at Manipal Hospital participating in the World Heart Day celebrations in Bangalore on Sunday.

BANGALORE: Five-year-old Ambika, who underwent heart surgery two months ago, is now leading a normal life. Similarly, Shashi Kumar (13), who was operated upon for a hole in his heart, is as normal as any other child.

On Sunday, it was a unique day for both the children, as they along with many others celebrated World Heart Day with doctors of Manipal Hospital in the “Braveheart Cultural Fest” organised by the hospital. Not only did they participate in various competitions, but also won prizes.

Nearly a hundred cardiac patients, who were treated at the hospital, took part in the festival that featured various competitions such as painting, song and dance, lemon and spoon race and musical chairs. Shashi Kumar, who won the first prize in the lemon and spoon race, said he regularly played in his school in K.R. Puram. “We are not allowed to play now because of exams,” he said.

Others expressed their happiness at being given a chance for a healthy life through the timely support of the hospital. “We are very happy that Manipal Hospital has remembered us even after we have gone back home. It shows that the hospital cares for us,” said Sunanda (18), who had undergone major surgery at the hospital.

Amulya, a child who was operated upon there, inaugurated an exhibition on “Healthy heart tips.”

R. Basil, managing director and chief executive officer of Manipal Health Systems, lauded the participants for being active even after undergoing major surgeries. Srikanth S. Raghavan, director of the paediatric cardiac services was present.
