Mica mining

Sheet mica used to be mined and exported on a large scale from Nellore mica belt since 1887, while scrap mica used to be dumped.

However, the mica mining industry collapsed due to foreign buyers finding micanite made out of scrap superior and cost effective over sheet mica.

Of the 1.23 lakh tonnes of scrap mica exported from India in 2003-04, around 97 p.c. was obtained from mine dumps without the need to either revive mining activities or pay taxes. T

here is need for the government to intervene and set the matter right.

Kurnool district neglected

Though YSR’s rule is nearing completion, not a single development sign is seen in Kurnool district. The district was shown a empty hand in all departments, be it infrastructure, agriculture or other. Whereas other three districts, Kadapa Chittoor and Anantapur including Nellore were being given the major share of the development pie. However Kurnool district which was the first capital district of the State is grossly neglected. Will the government realise this fact at least now?

Link institutions with industry

Universities have been established in every district in the State besides other institutions like JNTUs, Telugu university, Dravidian university, agriculture and veterinary science. But one thing that is missing is the meaningful liason with the local industry. How can the industry make progress without viable links with universities?

Preserve missionary buildings

J. Ackerman Coles and W.A. Stanton, two missionaries of American Baptist mission did yeoman service to spread education in Kurnool district in the early part of the 20th century. Stantonpuram, a village on the outskirts of Kurnool is named after W.A. Stanton. History has faithfully recorded the contribution of Christian missionaries to the society.It is time the government preserved their buildings like schools, churches as heritage monuments.
