Andhra Pradesh
Kolleru has in recent years emerged as a source of major floods in Krishna and West Godavari districts. Political leaders, during the last four decades, erected permanent structures for their pleasure and succeeded in making the ruling and opposition parties reduce the water coverage area of the lake. This led to more flood havoc - the position of arrivals and discharges remaining the same - besides slicing away the fishing area, affecting the poor gullible fishermen, who are solely dependent on fishing. The only course open to relieve the flood havoc is to widen the Upputeru, the bottleneck, and to evict the encroachers effectively. The existing contour positions were fixed scientifically by experts in pollution control, bird life safety, etc. Political interference with the life of the people of the area should not be allowed at any cost by the Government and the second crop leases should be given only to the poor ryots. N.V Rama Rao Visakhapatnam Sugar-free laddusSupply of sugar-free laddus by temples and sweet shops will not only reduce the diabetes but also dental problems. It also reduces the problem of obesity which is rampant. The same procedure can be followed by chocolate and biscuits manufacturing companies. The people may be advocated on the benefits of sugar-free candies, particularly youth and children. S. Purushotham Visakhapatnam Nab petty thievesRecently, a few residents of Ukkunagaram woke up one morning to find, to their utter dismay, that the water tap heads from the backyard were stolen. Earlier, there were occasions when the thieves stole soiled utensils from the backyard. Therefore, it appears that some petty thieves are resorting to stealing the most absurd things. On the other hand, the township police say they do not have sufficient staff to detect such petty thefts and advise the residents to keep their household articles within the four walls away from the gaze of the culprits. K.C. Mohanti Visakhapatnam Short term coursesIn the wake of the growing demand for employment, the Commissioner of Collegiate Education has proposed to introduce short term add-on courses in degree colleges to enable students equip themselves with the required skills. The Commissioner had expressed a desire to introduce nine add-on courses to be operated from Jawahar Knowledge Centres (JKCs) but unfortunately, the list does not include the most common trades which are within the reach of the rural poor students. I appeal to the authorities concerned to consider inclusion of short-term add-on courses like tailoring, cell phone servicing, TV mechanism and electrical operations, etc., which will be of help to the poor.
