THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Defence Minister A.K. Antony said on Sunday that his ministry would examine the State government’s proposal to set up an infantry regiment representing Kerala. An official statement said here that Mr. Antony had given an assurance in this regard to Law and Parliamentary Affairs M. Vijayakumar on a request made by him. He pointed out that there were several infantry regiments or territorial armies such as the Punjab Regiment, Madras Regiment, Rajput Regiment, Naga Regiment and Assam Regiment. Setting up a Kerala regiment would enable youth of the State to gain employment in the armed forces and help better utilisation of its human resource. The Minister also urged Mr. Antony to take steps to open up playgrounds and other sports facilities in the possession of the Navy, Army and the Air force to Kerala sportsmen for their training for the 2009 National Games, 2010 Commonwealth Games, and the 2012 London Olympics. Mr. Antony urged Mr. Vijayakumar to give directives to the Kerala Sports Council to take the initiative and work in cooperation with the various defence units in the State.
