“Need to check misuse of web by terrorist outfits”

Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH: The Chairman of the investors’ cell of the Punjab unit of the BJP, Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal on Sunday said that it was obvious that the UPA Government at the Centre was completely “ignorant” about the misuse of information technology by the terrorists, especially the World Wide Website to carry out activities against India and its people.

Through a statement issued here, Mr. Grewal demanded that Government immediately identify and block websites used by terror outfits or their sympathisers. He stressed the need for a dedicated team of technocrats armed with latest technology in the proposed federal agency to counter cyber terrorism. IT majors should be asked to self regulate their content and provide intelligence of any suspicious activity on their websites.

Also seeking an immediate ban on the trade and sale of mobile phone handsets which did not carry an authentic IMEI number, Mr Grewal demanded that an immediate order should be passed instructing telecom operators to stop all services to such connections. He said that the government would do well if it asked the service providers to furnish the list of all those connections where such handsets were used. technologies such as voice over IP and phones without IMEI nomenclature helped the terrorists to communicate and collaborate without their identity being known to anybody.

Mr Grewal expressed concern that certain popular portals on the Internet provided space to upload complete recipe to make sophisticated bombs from household items.
