SOCIAL WORK: Students cleaning a temple at Tiruvanaikaval in Tiruchi. TIRUCHI: To mark the celebrations of the ‘World Tourism Day’ organised by the Tourism Department, students of the Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College took up a cleaning programme at Sri Akilandeswari – Jambukeswarar temple at Tiruvanaikaval in the city on Saturday. ‘Praharas’ cleanedThey cleaned the second and the third ‘praharas’ besides the one around Amman sannidhi and in front of the shrine of Prasanna Vinayagar. A total of 100 students participated in the programme, according to the Tourist Officer, P. Pushparaj. He said that the Tourism Department was currently preparing a project for the beautification of Tiruvanaikaval in view of its historical and cultural heritage value. A sum of Rs. 2.7 crore would be sought for providing amenities including widening and re-laying of roads, street lights and augmentation of basic amenities in Tiruvanaikaval. The Mayor, Sarubala R. Tondaiman, inaugurated the camp and explained the amenities provided by the Corporation at Srirangam. The Corporation had mooted proposals for similar beautification projects at Tiruvanaikaval and the Rockfort areas in the city, she added. The Executive Officer of the temple, Balaguru, pleaded with the officials to organise the cleaning programmes at the temple premises periodically. The Joint Commissioner, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments, S. Balasubramanian was among those who spoke.
