Court urged not to quash notifications on bus permits

Staff Reporter

‘Transport corporations have incurred losses of Rs. 692 crore’

‘KSRTC will find it difficult to fill the vacuum if private buses are taken off the road’

High Court Bench asks KSTRC to file affidavit

BANGALORE: The State Government on Friday informed the Karnataka High Court that the cumulative losses of the North East Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NEKRTC), North West Road Transport Corporation (NWRTC) and the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) together stood at Rs. 692 crore.

In its affidavit filed before the court, the State said the cumulative losses of the NEKRTC was Rs. 265 crore, NWRTC Rs. 264 crore and the KSRTC Rs. 163 crore.

The affidavit was filed in relation to a petition by the KSRTC against the State challenging its notifications modifying the permits given to private bus operators to ply buses in the State. The KSRTC had urged the court to quash the modifications in respect of Kolar, Mysore, Bangalore, BTS (Bangalore Transport Service which was subsequently renamed as BMTC) and Kanakapura regions.

The affidavit urged the court not to quash the notifications.

It said that the KSRTC would find it difficult to fill the vacuum if the private buses were taken off the road.

It said that if the notifications were quashed the KSRTC would have to induct 5,000 buses and recruit 25,000 personnel. Salaries to the new recruits would cost the corporation Rs. 1,680 crore.

It said the petition was not maintainable as the KSRTC was a wing of the Government.

Adjourned

A Division Bench of the High Court comprising Justice S.R. Bannurmath and Justice Venugopala Gowda asked the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation to file its affidavit and adjourned further hearing of the case to October 3.
