CHENNAI: Tamil scholar and literary awards, instituted in the name of S.B. Athithanar, founder of the Daily Thanthi group of publications, were distributed on the occasion of his 104th birth anniversary here on Saturday. Kovi. Manisekaran received the veteran Tamil scholar award of Rs.1.5 lakh and K. Velnambi, the literary award of Rs.1 lakh.
Distributing the awards, M. Rajendran, Vice-Chancellor of Tamil University, Thanjavur, said Athithanar used a different style of language, despite opposition from Tamil scholars, to present news in such a way that it could be understood by the common man. At a time when regional news was not given prominence, it was Athithanar who gave wide coverage to local news, he added. Bharathi Bhaskar, Tamil orator, said Adhithanar’s newspapers gave identity to the language.
