‘Implement farmer panel’s proposals’

THANJAVUR: Farmers’ associations have urged the government to implement the recommendations of the National Commission on Farmers, led by agricultural scientist M.S. Swaminathan.

The resolution was passed at the special State conference of all farmers associations here on Saturday. K. Mohammed Ali, president of the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam; S. Gunasekaran, MLA and president of the Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam; and S. Ranganathan, secretary, Cauvery Delta Farmers Welfare Association, chaired the meeting.

K. Balakrishnan, general secretary of the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam; Venkatesh Athreya; R. Raja Chidambaram; S.A .Chinnasamy; and M. Cheran, president, Federation of Cauvery Delta Farmers’ Associations, spoke.

The meeting urged the Centre to submit a White Paper on the talks on the WTO agreement. The government should not take any decision that might harm the interest of farmers. It requested the Central and State governments to allot more funds for farming and not to allow multinational companies in agriculture.
