Thiruvananthapuram reigns supreme

CHAMPION SQUAD: The Thiruvananthapuram team which won the overall title in the State aquatics championship on Sunday.

THRISSUR: Thiruvananathapuram made it six-in-a-row, retaining the overall title at the State senior aquatics championship, which concluded at the Aquatic Complex here on Sunday.

But, the two-day meet belonged to Railway Institute’s Anoop Augustine, who struck gold in all his six events and set new meet records in all but one of them.

With 35 points, he won the men’s individual title, for the third time in a row. Thrissur’s Josna P. Joy won the women’s individual title, also with 35 points (her third title in four years).

Host Thrissur finished second overall with 265 points; Thiruvananthapuram’s tally was 291. The third place went to Railway Institute, with 219.

It was indeed a memorable debut in the competition for Railway Institute, which ran away with the men’s team title with 219 points, well ahead of Thiruvananthapuram (117) and Thrissur (77). In the women’s event, the host emerged the champion with 188 points, while Thiruvananthapuram (174) and Palakkad (52) finished second and third respectively.

The final day witnessed seven records in all. Besides Anoop (men’s 50m breaststroke, 200m breaststroke and 200m individual medley), the other individual record-breakers were R.S. Ashik of Thiruvananthapuram (men’s 800m freestyle), K. Rajeev of Railway Institute (men’s 50m butterfly) and C. Abhilash of Railway Institute (men’s 100m backstroke).

The Railway Institute (Athul Krishnaraj, K. Rajeev, K.C. Sreejith and Abhilash Kumar) set a new record in the men’s 4 x 100m freestyle relay.
