Sir, — The Cabinet meeting in Gulbarga provided the public an opportunity to see Chief Minister and his Cabinet colleagues. The promises made by the Government are welcome. If the concern expressed by the Ministers is transformed into action then the people will be grateful to the Government. Syedkhaja, Gulbarga Environment protectionSir, — Although there has been much talk about environment protection, pollution is increasing by the day. Recently, Ganesha idols were immersed in water bodies, which affects the aquatic life. It is better to use Ganesha idols where colours are not used or use those painted with natural colours. J.F. D’Souza, Mangalore Police actionSir, — The recent attacks on Christian prayer halls and churches are an indication of a well organised and systematic targeting of the Christian community. The conversion issue is a sheer excuse for Hindu fundamentalists. The police entered the St. Sebastian’s church at Permannur in Mangaloreand lathi-charged the people. The parish priest Fr. Thomas pleaded with the police several times to give him a few minutes to clear the people, but it was of no avail. Sr. Celine Vas, Mangalore Skywalks neededSir, — Vehicles ply at high speeds on the upgraded Bellary Road to and from the BIA. The people living on either side of the road find it difficult to cross due to continuous flow of traffic throughout the day. It is suggested that skywalks be built at a few points on the road. T. Sriram Deshik, Bangalore Footpath slabsSir, — Karnataka has not received enough rainfall this season due to which groundwater levels have depleted. As most footpaths in Bangalore and other cities are covered with granite, there is no chance for the rainwater to seep into the ground. When questioned as to why they cover footpaths in front of their shops with granite, shop-owners reply adamantly that the matter concerns the BBMP. Footpaths are also encroached upon by these shop-owners. It is time that the authorities issued notices to encroachers. B.S.
