A total of 20 boats, including four snake boats, participated in the competition. Nedumbassery: In a keenly fought final that pepped up the spirits of a large number of viewers lined up on either side of the river bank, Jawahar Thyankary first closed in and then edged out Alappattu Chundan to lift the trophy in the snake boat category of the Paravoor boat race held here on Sunday. In the A-grade finals of the Thekkan Odi category, ‘Hanuman’ lifted the trophy and ‘Guruvayoorappan’ emerged the runner-up while ‘St. Sebastian’ finished first and ‘Sreemurukan’ finished second in the B-grade finals. Rear Admiral Bhaktha Valsala, principal of the Ezhimala Naval Academy, distributed the prizes to the winners. V.D. Satheesan, MLA, flagged off the race. A total of 20 boats, including four snake boats from Alappuzha, and 16 Odi boats participated in the competition organised by the Paravoor municipality. This was for the first time that snake boats from Alappuzha participated in the Paravoor Boat Race held in the backwaters of Paravoor. Earlier, the event was inaugurated by N.K. Premachandran, Minister for Water Resources, at the function which was also attended by Fisheries Minister S. Sarma and Lonappan Nambadan, MP. Prior to the race, there was a spectacular pageantry in which the oarsmen of the participating boats displayed their skills
