“Protect rich culture”
Madurai is perhaps the only other city apart from Athens that can claim to have a rich history that is as old as 3,000 years. Such a rich culture and heritage had to be protected and showcased, Collector S.S. Jawahar said here on Friday.
Addressing the World Tourism Day celebrations at Gandhi Memorial Museum, he said that such functions were a step in the right direction. He also lauded the artistes who gave performances during the celebrations.
The State Government had constituted a welfare board for 100 folk arts to aid them. To rejuvenate those arts, the ‘Theruvora Thiruvizha’ (street corner festival) had been organised on the Chithirai streets and it would feature 52 folk arts.
Elaborating on the various tourism-related development works, he said that on Chithirai streets alone Rs. 5 crore-worth works had been undertaken.
