The rider tried to overtake a lorry, lost control and fell Victims’ friends refute police charge BANGALORE: In what police say was a drag race that went terribly wrong, two engineering students died when their motorcycles came under the wheels of a lorry near the Kumbalgod bus stand around 6.30 a.m. on Sunday. The dead, Varun (21), a final year student of Ghousia College of Engineering near Ramanagara, and Naren Prasad (19), a student of Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering, were part of a 10-member group on five motorcycles on its way to a coffee outlet on the highway near Maddur, according to the Bidadi police. “The group of 10 youngsters was going to the coffee outlet on five two-wheelers. Some of the group members were riding imported racing bikes. Naren was riding with Varun on the pillion,” the Bidadi police said. “Naren tried to overtake a lorry near the Kumbalgod bus stand, lost control and fell. Another lorry, which was coming from behind, ran over the two boys who died on the spot,” they said. However, Varun’s friends insisted that it was not a drag race. “Varun and Naren were not participating in any drag race,” Arun, a close friend of Varun, told The Hindu. “Every Sunday 20 or 30 of us go to Maddur on our bikes. Some of us have imported 1,000 cc bikes. They were going there this Sunday too but Varun and Naren were not part of that group. They were on their own,” he added.
