Engineer held in connection with building collapse

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Cubbon Park police arrested the site engineer in connection with the collapse of a building under construction on Mahatma Gandhi Road in which a labourer was killed here on Saturday. The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), on its part, could withdraw the building licence issued to the owner of the building. The police identified the site engineer as Nanjundaswamy, and a case of negligence has been booked against him.

Meanwhile, sources in the BBMP’s engineering division told The Hindu on Sunday that though the owner had got the building plan sanctioned and taken all other required permits from the palike, he had not complied with the safety norms. The palike has filed a case of negligence against Surendra, the owner of the building.

“We have filed a case of negligence against him with the police. Though we are authorised to withdraw the building licence, we will first issue a show-cause notice to the owner and then initiate further action,” the sources said.

A 23-year-old labourer died and seven persons suffered minor injuries when the centring of the building collapsed on Saturday. The Fire and Emergency Services personnel found the body trapped under the concrete after nearly a 10-hour search. BBMP engineers, who inspected the spot, said the structure collapsed due to overweight.
