BANGALORE: Army teams — Red and Green — had mixed fortunes in the State Super Division hockey league championship at the SAI South Centre grounds here on Monday. Army Red routed Pioneer Corps Training Centre (PCTC) 10-2 with Ignace Tirkey scoring five goals while Army Green came a cropper against Namdhari losing 1-3. Title favourite BPCL, with Olympian Sabu Varkey scheming the moves, got the better of ASC at 3-1. Rajendra Sharma drew first blood for ASC in the 24th minute that stirred the BPCL team into action. Prabdeep Singh (25th), Amar Aiyamma (64th) and Sabu Varkey (68th) then struck with precision to register BPCL’s second straight win in as many matches. Army Red looked businesslike right from the start and opened its account in the third minute through Majji. Then S.V. Sunil (42nd), Ignace Tirkey (45th, 52nd, 59th, 68th and 69th), Armugham (56th) and Chitaranjan Singh (60th and 63rd) swelled the final score. Meanwhile S. Lakra and Rajesh Indwar struck a goal apiece for PCTC to reduce the final margin. Army Green began promisingly and went ahead in the 18th minute through Suresh Kumar. However, once Namdhari settled down the Greens’ defence fell apart as Manthri Singh (25th), Karan Singh (34th) and Gurnail Singh (36th) struck for Namdhari.
