BANGALORE: There is some good news for adventure buffs seeking a good base on the fringes of Bandipur National Park as the Jungle Lodges and Resorts is increasing its cottage strength. The 10 new cottages that will be added to the present 12 at Bandipur Safari Lodge located at Melakamanahalli in Gundlupet taluk, will be inaugurated on Tuesday by Tourism Minister G. Janardhana Reddy. The safari lodge, located at the edge of Bandipur Tiger Reserve, provides excellent wildlife viewing opportunities in the reserve at daybreak and in the evenings. There are plenty of opportunities for nature walks, bird watching, wildlife photography and elephant rides. The summit of Gopalaswamy Betta (12 km from the lodge) or another exhilarating trek along the slopes of the Moyar Gorge (18 km) could be challenging for adventurists. Among other facilities that have been added to the safari lodge include Golghar, a conference hall, a reception hall and a dining hall. A release said that the new facilities had been added with a grant of Rs. 1.27 crore from the Union Government and Rs. 97.75 lakh from the State Government. It said that Bandipur Tiger Reserve is one of the first seven parks in India to be brought under Project Tiger in 1973. Nestling at the foothills of the Nilgiris, Bandipur was one of the private hunting grounds of the Mysore Maharajas, and today is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.
