‘UPA, NDA unlikely to get majority’

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will fall short of majority and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is unlikely to emerge as a pivotal player after the next Lok Sabha elections, psephologist and Professor, Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Yogendra Yadav has said.

Delivering a talk on Lok Sabha elections 2009, organised by the Institute of Parliamentary Affairs and the Department of Political Science of Kerala University here on Monday, Prof. Yadav said there were chances of a hung Lok Sabha. No pre-poll electoral alliance would get a majority, but a political combination would emerge after the elections. Parties such the Trinamool Congress and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) would have a decisive say then. The UPA and the Congress were unlikely to improve their positions. But the UPA allies would gain strength. The NDA would shrink, but the BJP would make advantage. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) which had a historical win in the last Lok Sabha election may suffer a similar loss. The challenge for the Congress and the BJP was to get more seats from Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, he said.

Minister for Parliamentary Affairs M. Vijayakumar presided. Head of the Department of Political Science G. Gopa Kumar welcomed the gathering. Institute director-general J. Prabhash proposed a vote of thanks.
