Little hope on Singur: Karat

Gargi Parsai

NEW DELHI: CPI(M) leader Prakash Karat said on Monday that there was little hope of Tata Motors staying on in Singur in the face of the continuing Trinamool Congress agitation.

“The Tatas are not willing to resume work if the situation continues to be the same. Despite assurances of adequate security, there has not been much progress,” Mr. Karat said during an interaction with members of the Indian Women’s Press Corps here.

He warned that if the Tatas were to withdraw from West Bengal, the people of the State would “react against the forces that did not let this happen.”

“This is not just about land acquisition. There is opposition to power and irrigation projects as well. Basically, they don’t want development because it is the Left government there.”

In Nandigram, he said, there had been “administrative and political mistakes.”
