MARSEILLE: The recent attacks on Christians in Orissa and Karnataka came under scrutiny at the India-European Summit here on Monday. With Prime Minister Manmohan Singh standing three feet away from him, Jose Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, referred to the anti-Christian incidents. Though he termed it India’s “internal matter,” the European official appreciated the Indian government’s “strongest and clearest stand.” When a French journalist sought the Prime Minister’s views, Dr. Singh said: “Let me say that India is a secular state, multicultural society; the Constitution of India guarantees to all freedom to profess and propagate their religion.” He told the media that the Centre had already sent federal forces to help the State government restore law and order.
