An NREGS beneficiary garlanding district Collector Shashi Bhushan Kumar at Garla. The implementation of the National Employment Guarantee Scheme helped in providing economic independence to rural women in the district. The District Collector, Shashi Bhushan Kumar said here today that the women were in the forefront of the scheme. A majority of the rural women could avail the benefits under the scheme not only to empower themselves but to better the lot of their families. Out of 6, 36,456 individuals provided wage employment under the scheme during 2008-2009, 3,39,957 were women and 2,96,499 were men. There were some 2,56,338 individuals from the Scheduled Tribes and 1,37,833 from the Scheduled Caste among those who had availed the wage employment. Besides them in all 4,856 physically challenged persons were also given wage employment. The NREGS could help generate 1, 41,51,387 person days generated so far this year as against a cumulative of 3,15,84,030 since the inception of the scheme. The average wage availed by the wage seekers was Rs. 80.46, while every household was provided 41.84 days of employment on an average. As many as 15,923 works were taken up under the NREGS and almost all of them were completed. Khammam has the highest number of 13,23,516 adult members enrolled in the 5,65,389 job cards issued in 793 gram panchayats of the 46 revenue mandals. s against the total labour budget of Rs. 190 crores for the year, the administration could spend Rs. 129.74 crores on the job scheme and it included a wage component of Rs. 113.85 crores. The district could utilise Rs. 291.42 crores on the scheme right from its inception. The Collector has explained that in all 28,362 households could complete 100 days of wage employment under the scheme. The scheme had a positive impact on the finances of the rural poor. It could help check migration from the villages while relieving a majority of the households from rural indebtedness. Because of the reforms effected in the implementation of the scheme, the administration would go in for asset creation along with wage employment in a big way this year.
