NEW DELHI: The Delhi Jal Board would speed up the process of laying water and sewer lines in all the unauthorised colonies across the Capital before the commencement of the Commonwealth Games in 2010, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said on Tuesday. She was speaking at the foundation laying ceremony of a 146 lakh litres capacity underground reservoir and booster pumping station at Chhattarpur. To ensure equitable drinking water distribution and adequate availability of water, the Chief Minister said, the Jal Board would construct 53 underground reservoirs before the Games. “There is bound to be a substantial improvement in the water supply position in the coming years,” she said, exhorting people to avoid wastage of drinking water as it was very precious. The Chhattarpur underground reservoir, she said, was an important project as it would address the issue of scarcity of drinking water in the Chhattarpur and Mangolpuri Assembly segments. To be constructed at a cost of Rs.72.21 crore, the underground reservoir would become functional by December 2009. It would provide water to four lakh people living in 18 villages and adjoining colonies in Chhattarpur. The reservoir would get water from the Sonia Vihar water treatment plant, which is 40 km away, and would benefit residents of Maidan Garhi, Rajpur Khurd, Satbari, Sahurpur, Chandan Hola, Fatehpur Beri, Asola, Dera, Bhatti, Andheria Mor, Gadaipur, Jonapur, Mandi, Manglapuri, Gitorni and Aya Nagar.
