HYDERABAD: Students of the SOS Children’s Village in Vottinagulapally on Monday sang songs, enjoyed reading comic books in their library while a few others dabbled with the sleek Dell machines in the newly-constructed computer lab.

A Dell learning centre was inaugurated on the school premises on Monday by Rajeev Kapoor, site director of Hyderabad Dell International Services. The company built a small building that housed a new library, music room and computer centre. The computer lab, company officials claimed, would have 20 computers with Internet facility. Tabla, sitar, guitar, harmonium, kanjeera, congo, synthesiser, violin and dholak are the musical instruments given to the school. A few books were also added to the school library, as part of the initiative.

The centre would enable students to update their computer skills, gain exposure to music and cultivate reading habit, said Mr. Kapoor.

Speaking at the launch, he said, “The centre is part of our endeavour to enable children from under-served sections of society to acquire IT knowledge and progress in the digitally-driven world.” The centre would also see Dell employees in Hyderabad sharing their knowledge with the children. “Our children will hugely benefit from the learning centre that will provide a holistic perspective to their personality development, said Harpeet Singh, Deputy Head of fund raising, SOS Children’s village.
