Notification on smoking ban issued
Special Correspondent
Bangalore: In accordance with the directions of the Centre, the State Government on Wednesday issued a notification banning smoking in public places from Thursday.
Member-Secretary of the State Anti-Tobacco Cell has defined public places as auditoriums, hospitals, amusement centres, railway stations, health institutions, restaurants, places of refreshments, public offices, courts, educational institutions, libraries, workplaces, shopping malls, theatres, eateries, discotheques, coffee-houses, pubs, bars and airports.
The violators will be fined Rs. 200.
However, a hotel having 30 or more rooms and restaurants with a seating capacity of 30 or more can earmark smoking zones.
These places, however, are required to display “no smoking” boards at the entry points.
It is for the owner, proprietor, manager , supervisor or incharge of the affairs at a public place to ensure that the ban is complied with, the notification said.
