Academic council favours inclusion of experts in inquiry committee

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Bangalore University Academic Council decided to reconstitute a local inquiry committee — to include subject experts — whose mandate is to look into granting affiliation to newly instituted postgraduate diploma courses for 2008-2009.

At the academic council meet held on Tuesday, members questioned the logic behind setting up this committee — headed by Syndicate member A.P. Ranganath — without experts.

As a result, the council has not approved the committee’s recommendation to grant affiliation to courses in Actuarial studies and Insurance Marketing and Financial Planning on offer at Professional College of Computer Science and Management studies, and Insurance, Marketing and Financial Planning at Sharada Vikas Institute of Management studies, both with a recommended intake of 60 students each.

It had also recommended affiliation to PG diploma courses in Japanese management to NMKRV College, which has been approved though the recommended intake of 120 has not been cleared.

Approved

The council approved research programmes leading to PHDs in 19 colleges affiliated to the Bangalore University.

A mini convocation was held by the academic council and it has been decided to award degrees to nearly 17,000 students this year.

The council also approved the resolutions of the faculty of commerce and management, and granted approval for Bachelor of Banking and Finance (BBF) and Bachelor of Insurance and Actuarial Studies (BIAS).

At present, only SAP-K, a subsidiary educational organisation under Karnataka State Souharda Federal Cooperative and National School of Education and Research have been given permission to offer these courses, a decision which will be reviewed after five years. A committee will also be formed to look into allotment of faculty for PG courses of the department.

The council also approved the recommendations of the Faculty of Law to enhance and grant equivalence to two students from foreign universities.

The council also approved starting of M. Ed. course in St. Paul’s College of Education and Institution and a (Late) R. Vibhakar Reddy Memorial Gold Medal to the top ranker in M Sc. Geology.

In the case concerning permission of a B. Ed. student of the 2005-2006 batch to appear for the examination under the new scheme, members of the council remarked that individual cases should not be brought in for deliberation and a more general rule must be formed.
