dated October 2, 1958: Withdrawal of forces

The United States, Secretary of State, Mr. John Foster Dulles, declared at a press conference in Washington on September 30 that if there should be a renunciation of force in the Formosa Straits, it should be reciprocal and apply to both sides. In what observers believed to be an important clarification, Mr. Dulles said the United States could not expect a unilateral renunciation of force by the Chinese Communists. Mr. Dulles said that like President Eisenhower he would do everything or go anywhere in the cause of peace.
