The stampede at the Chamunda Devi temple in Jodhpur on Tuesday could have been averted — or at least the death toll reduced — if the authorities had made proper security arrangements. That there was no ambulance at the site shows the utter lack of responsibility on the part of the authorities. Failure to provide proper security and infrastructure at temples during festivals and later announcing a few lakhs of rupees in the name of compensation have become the habit of governments and authorities.
