Good day for Indians
New Delhi: Four of the six Indians, including Arvind Bhat and Chetan Anand, advanced to the men’s singles second round of the Bitburger Open badminton tournament in Saarbruecken, Germany, on Wednesday.
Seventh seed Bhat thumped local favourite Hannes Kasbauer 21-14, 21-13, while Chetan defeated Kieran Merrilees of Scotland 21-9, 21-6.
In other men’s single matches, 16th seed P. Kashyap defeated Philip Merz of Germany 21-16, 21-9, while qualifier Sourabh Verma beat Marius Breuer 21-14, 21-13.
However, other Indians in the fray, Abhimanyu Singh and Ajay Jayaram, found the going tough and lost to Frederic Gaspard of Belgium and Hans Kristian Vittinghus of Denmark respectively.
In men’s doubles, the pair of Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas beat the German duo of Denis Nyenhuis and Rio Willianto 21-17, 21-10. — PTI
