HYDERABAD: Amid the spate of suicides in Sircilla town of Karimnagar district, the Government has appointed a special officer in the rank of Deputy Collector to coordinate the relief work to bail out the distressed weavers. A bail-out package was also worked out at a high-level review meeting Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy held on Thursday with Finance Minister K. Rosaiah and Textiles Minister P. Sabitha Indra Reddy and senior officials. The Special Officer was entrusted the task of looking into the needs of the weavers, including their debts and cause for distress among them. The official would be stationed in Sircilla and coordinate various programmes that are in place for the weavers. The Government had already deputed 29 Mandal Parishad Development Officers in all the wards of Sircilla town to study the weavers’ problems. The officials are expected to submit their report to the Special officer within a month. Briefing reporters later, Mr. Rosaiah said unemployment, consumption of adulterated toddy and spurious liquor is leading to ill-health among the weavers. Curb on liquor saleMobile excise teams would tour Sircilla and other surrounding areas to curb sale of liquor. A de-addiction centre would also be opened in the Sircilla Government Hospital to treat weavers addicted to alcohol. The Government had decided to conduct a mega Arogyasri health camp.
