Triangular contest likely in byelections: Kumaraswamy

Staff Correspondent

‘No initiative from Congress to tie up with JD(S)’

JD(S) is prepared to join hands with the Congress

Kumaraswamy regrets that like-minded parties are not coming together to defeat BJP

MYSORE: The former Chief Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) leader H.D. Kumaraswamy has said a triangular contest is likely in the coming byelections from seven Assembly constituencies, as there has been no initiative from the Congress for a tie-up with JD(S) to defeat the Bharaitya Janata Party (BJP).

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, he said that as both the Congress and the JD(S) were strong in all the seven constituencies, the defeat of the BJP candidates was a foregone conclusion.

When asked whether JD(S) was ready for an alliance with the Congress, Mr. Kumaraswamy said that the JD(S) was prepared to join hands with the Congress, but it was the Congress which was not responding favourably. “In case of any proposal from Congress, we are prepared for discussions even now,” he said.

On the formation of a third front in the State on the lines of attempts at the national level, he regretted that like-minded political parties were not showing any interest in coming together to defeat the “communal” BJP.

To a question, he said that Siddaganga Math seer Sri Shivakumara Swamiji, who refused to participate in the Dasara celebrations last year, now found it convenient to attend Dasara this year. However, he said that he did not want to discuss the issue as it was sensitive in nature.

Without naming anybody he said that of late religious heads had started caring more for their castes than issues.

Mr. Kumaraswamy took exception to Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa making use of inaugural Dasara function to attack Opposition parties.
