Gandhi Jayanthi fete at NLC
Special Correspondent
NEYVELI: The Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) celebrated the 139th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi with usual pomp and fervour on Thursday.
The daylong celebrations started with garlanding of Gandhi’s bust situated in front of the administration office in Neyveli Township by J.N. Prasanna Kumar, NLC Chairman-cum-Managing Director.
On the occasion, the members of the Neyveli Ladies Club recited Ramdhun. The events at the Lignite Hall began with the singing of Mahatma’s favourite song “Vaishnava Janatho” by the members of the ladies’ club.
Speaking on the occasion Mr. Prasanna Kumar pointed out that all the outstanding issues could be amicably resolved through talks, instead of resorting to violence. He stressed that education should be imparted to every citizen, which, he hoped, would inculcate the practice of non-violence among them.
He observed that one should consider his father, mother and teacher as god and should not desert parents in their old age. He called upon everyone to take an oath on the occasion to solve problems through dialogue and love, and not to harm others in the name of belief.
Earlier at the Lignite Hall, scriptures from the Bhagavad Gita, the Bible, the Koran, Thirukkural and Naladiyar were read out by students of the NLC-run schools, and representatives of the Indian Christian Cultural Association, Neyveli Muslim Jamaath, Neyveli United Tamil Association.
Community worship was held at various places of worship in Neyveli Township in the evening.
