dated October 3, 1958: U.S. policy in Formosa

Mr. John Foster Dulles, the Secretary of State, has sent a message to Formosa to “straighten out” an impression among Kuomintang Chinese leaders that there had been a major shift of American policy. Mr. Dulles, speaking to reporters in Washington disclosed that the message was sent to Mr. Everett Drumwright, the United States Ambassador at Taipeh. The State department spokesman, Mr. Lincoln White, told reporters that this message was designed to clear up “misunderstandings” in the KMT Chinese Government.
