Letters to the Editor
This refers to the article “Towards the ideal of a hunger free India” by M.S. Swaminathan (October 2). A specific targeted approach is required to eliminate hunger from our country. The very notion of “electoral democratic governance” has to be replaced with “participatory governance,” as the former sidelines the people at large. By making our local self-government units more participatory and financially viable, the goal can be achieved. A mandatory provision of Corporate Social Responsibility with a community-specific approach under government vigil can make the difference. Chinmaya Nayak, Bhubaneswar Bubhukshita kim na karoti papam. (The person suffering from hunger can do any crime). This Sanskrit proverb exactly fits the Indian context. The solution suggested by Dr. Swaminathan is praiseworthy. Yashpal Kshirsagar, Jodhpur The Food and Agriculture Organisation tells us that every day 85.4 crore people go to bed on an empty stomach in our planet. The U.S. administration offers billions of dollars to save its sick financial institutions. This amount is more than sufficient to implement projects to enhance food production in countries where high prices prevent people from purchasing sufficient food.
R.Gopimony, Thiruvananthapuram Mahatma Gandhi always longed for the emancipation of the downtrodden. The idea of transforming Wardha into a Gandhi district is relevant to our developmental agenda today. Why only Wardha? Let us transform India into Gandhi India. Ashwani Sharma Ghaziabad
