News Analysis
A report “Anbumani to write to Prime Minister about scrapping of Article 377” (October 2, 2008) incorrectly referred to Article 377 of the Indian Penal Code in the heading, strapline and text. It should have been Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which criminalises unnatural sex. “Article” refers to the Constitution. An item “Consumer price index up 2 points” (“Snippets – Business” page, October 1, 2008) said the all-India consumer price index number for industrial workers (CPI-IW) (base 2001=100) “improved by two points” to 145 in August from 143 in the previous month. The Consumer price index rises or falls. It is wrong to say it “improved”.
The caption of a standalone photograph titled “Regal splendour” (October 1, 2008) gave the name of the scion of the Mysore royal family as Srikantadutta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, leading to a query. Officially (this includes his portal), his name is listed as Srikantadutta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, though conventionally, it is spelt as Wodeyar. A report “Indian team for first Test to be announced today” (“Sport”, October 1, 2008) erroneously reported, in the last paragraph, that Shaun Tait is in the Australian Test squad currently touring India. The Terms of Reference for the Readers’ Editor are on www.thehindu.com Corrections and Clarifications A correction published on October 3, 2008 said "Article" is used in reference to the Constitution. This is in a general sense and did not mean it applied only to the Constitution. A reader points out that the Limitation Act, 1963, also has articles.
