NEW DELHI: The U.S. Senate approval of the India-U.S. civil nuclear agreement drew mixed political response on Thursday with the Congress terming it a “landmark development,” the BJP as a “defeat for the country” and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) asking the Government not to surrender to Washington.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi complimented Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on his firm resolve leading to culmination of the process that would help the country in addressing challenges of both energy security and climate change.
The CPI (M) said what was passed was “Hyde Act plus” that went against India on key strategic issues and with the U.S. promising to work with other NSG countries to prevent nuclear supplies to India in case Washington terminated the agreement.
