Exhibition helps enhance awareness about tigers

Udhagamandalam: In keeping with the catch phrase think globally and act locally, the CPR Environmental Education Centre (CPREEC) has organised a three-day exhibition entitled ‘Tiger!! Tiger!!’ at the Tourist Information Centre of the Nilgiris Hotels and Restaurants Association.

The exhibition which opened on Friday sheds light on various aspects of the national animal like its evolution, behaviour, social structure, cultural role, ecological significance and its endangered status.

It also underscores the need to prevent it from becoming extinct.

Stating that as part of the wildlife week celebrations, the CPREEC organises a series of exhibitions on the environment every year, the Field Officer of the Centre, M. Kumaravelu, told ‘The Hindu’ that this year focus was on the tiger.

The exhibition will remain open between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.

The District Forest Officer, the Nilgiris North, K. Soundarapandiyan, who inaugurated the event said that an exhibition which focussed attention on a single wildlife species was rare.

Vaasamalli, a prominent member of the Toda tribal community, said that high priority should be accorded to the preservation of the Shola-grassland eco system of the Blue Mountains.

M. Keerthana, a Std. XI student of Coimbatore, said that through such programmes a great deal can be learnt about the flora and fauna.
