Students take up ‘Mission Green Earth’

Staff Reporter

The project is part of the United Nations campaign

Schools to organise contests

COIMBATORE: More than 700 schools and 900 colleges in and around Coimbatore are joining the campaign for a greener earth. The “Mission Green Earth” project initiated by Art of Living, Coimbatore Chapter, will involve planting of saplings and maintaining them.

The project is part of the United Nations millennium campaign towards the achievement of the millennium development goals, which include ending hunger, fighting poverty, child health, gender equity, universal education, combating HIV/AIDS and environmental sustainability. “Mission Green Earth” aims at creating awareness among the general public on the need to plant trees. The aim is to plant 100 million trees by 2015, says Loganayaki Ganesan, Project Co-ordinator.

The project will involve motivating every school to form a ‘Mission Green Earth Club,’ organising interschool power-point presentation contests and creating brand ambassadors for the project.

Every school can observe a green day celebration with students wearing green coloured dress. They can also organise contests within the school and make the students aware of the need to make the planet a greener one, Ms. Loganayaki says.

“At the college level, the NSS volunteers of about 100 colleges affiliated to Anna University and 80 colleges affiliated to Bharathiar University are going to take the project across,” she adds.

Tree park

A tree park will be set up at the Bharathiar University by installing a drip irrigation system. About 100 saplings will be planted in the first phase. More than 23,000 saplings have been planted in Coimbatore district.

The Art of Living, Coimbatore chapter, is also approaching corporate companies, social and cultural associations, clubs and forums to join the campaign. The organisation is in touch with the Forest Department officials for sourcing saplings.

The organisation is also appealing to government and private institutions and the public in general to read out a pledge (on achieving the UN’s goals by 2015) between October 17 and 19. Interested institutions can approach the organisation for the pledge. For details, contact 94431 26774 or 98945 27991.
