NSS criticises Centre’s decision on creamy layer

KOTTAYAM: The Nair Service Society (NSS) has accused the Central government of taking decisions in the reservation issue with political motive and alleged that the decision to increase the income ceiling to identify the creamy layer among the reserved communities to Rs.4.5 lakh will only satisfy the rich among the reserved communities.

In a press note issued at the NSS headquarters at Perunna on Friday, general secretary P.K. Naryana Panicker said that with the new decision, the issue of social justice was doomed. “This is only an attempt to circumvent the spirit of the Supreme Court verdict on the issue,” he said.

This would amount to declaring that there was no creamy layer among the reserved communities. As per the apex court verdict, the criteria for consideration for reservation should include not only social and educational backwardness but also economic backwardness, he said. The new decision would upset the spirit of the directive and work against the interests of the economically backward among the reserved categories, he said.
