Hyderabad
Smoking ban being enforced
Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD: Smarting under pressure for not implementing the ban on smoking in public places, the district administration woke up and made an effort to enforce the ban at a few places in Hyderabad on Friday.
Teams christened as anti-tobacco smoking squads sought the help of NGOs and moved into areas in Nampally and Abids, but the focus was more on campaigning aspect.
The teams imposed a penalty of Rs 100 each on five persons, but the smokers could not pay the fine.
“Several of them pleaded that they were not aware of the smoke ban and that’s why we tried to educate them by giving them the campaign material”, officials maintained.
The teams rounded up several people smoking in public places and let them off with a stern warning after giving them posters, pamphlets and other campaigning material against smoking.
The district administration has formed seven anti-smoking squads who along with local NGOs would be visiting identified public spaces to spread awareness and later on impose penalties.
