Condemnable

This refers to the report that a medical examination conducted on a nun who was sexually assaulted in Kandhamal in August has confirmed that she was raped (Oct. 3). The incident is highly condemnable. The horrendous act is an affront to the nun’s fundamental right to religious freedom. One hopes the case will be investigated thoroughly and the culprits meted out exemplary punishment.

The situation in Kandhamal is shocking. Has the government machinery in Orissa ground to a halt? That Hindutva elements have succeeded in perpetrating their agenda of attacking Christians who believe in peaceful coexistence is a shame on all Indians.

I thank The Hindu for giving due coverage to the attacks on Christians in Orissa and other States. The newspaper’s unbiased reporting has been the attraction for me for 40 years.

I wish it continues to report on, and stand by, the suffering humanity, particularly a peace-loving community. I request it to continue to fight relentlessly for the cause of truth and justice.

Rushing Central forces to help Naveen Patnaik is like arming the wolf to protect the sheep. A government that allows the gang rape of a nun in the presence of its police should be dismissed.

When Muslims were being killed in Gujarat in 2002 and the Narendra Modi government appeared unable to control the violence, there was a huge uproar forcing the Centre to send the army to the State. Rights activists relentlessly fought to secure justice for the victims and punishment for the perpetrators of the crime. In contrast, the reaction to the happenings in Orissa — where Christians have been hounded and a nun has been raped — appears subdued.

It is clear that the Patnaik government is unable to control the situation. The Centre is doing nothing except rushing additional police forces to the State. The Prime Minister’s expression of concern is too little too late.

The informative reports being published by The Hindu since Sept. 30 have given a new focus to the happenings in Orissa. The Union Cabinet’s special meeting to discuss the situation in the State is the result of The Hindu’s initiative.

Felton Vaz,

Tuticorin
