dated October 4, 1958: Postage stamps

A new watermark will be introduced in India’s postage stamps from October 27, 1958. The existing watermark on the adhesive stamp paper used for printing postage stamps consists of a five-pointed multiple star and this will be replaced by the outline of the Lion Capital of Asoka. The new water-marked paper, according to a Government press release, will be used for stamps of the denominations of 2, 5, 10, 20 and 25 nP in the current ‘ordinary’ decimal coinage series and these will be made available on October 27 at the 13 Philatelic Bureaux in the country and at the post offices at Bombay, Calcutta, Madras, New Delhi, Simla, Lucknow, Patna, Shillong, Hyderabad, Cuttack, Nagpur, Jaipur, Kurnool, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Mysore and Trivandrum. The replacement of the existing star-watermarked paper for the remaining denominations of the current ‘ordinary’ as well as the ‘service’ series of postage stamps will be made progressively.
