Projecting the products of powerlooms in Tamil Nadu

Seven-day exhibition opened at Hindi Prachar Sabha premises

Machine magic: Visitors taking a look at the saris exhibited in the textiles expo at Hindi Prachar Sabha on Friday.

CHENNAI: A seven-day exhibition of cotton and polyester clothing manufactured by powerlooms in Tamil Nadu was inaugurated on the Hindi Prachar Sabha premises in T. Nagar on Friday.

The 20 stalls at the exhibition, which is being organised by the Powerloom Development and Export Council (PDEXIL) and the Regional Textile Commissioner’s Office in Coimbatore, have manufacturers displaying the varied powerloom products.

Products made of various materials such as cotton, art silk, acrylic, polyester and metallic zari have been displayed at the buyer-seller meet cum powerloom mela which will provide the manufacturers an opportunity to meet buyers/exporters as well as retail customers.

The display includes T-shirts priced at Rs.99, shirts priced between Rs.175 and Rs.249, cotton saris from Rs.270 to Rs.550, terry towel sets from Rs.55, door curtains at Rs.160 and window curtains at Rs.140 and salwar materials from Rs.300 onwards. There is Bagampuri cotton from Kolkata with prints and embroidery on materials like chiffon, georgette too. M.S.Mathivanan, Chairman, PDEXIL, said that the exhibition has been timed to coincide with the festival season. Powerloom produced materials are of good quality and also priced less. He said the increase in prices of cotton and cotton yarn and frequent power cuts had hit the industry. There were a total of 5 lakh powerlooms in Tamil Nadu.

It will be open on all days from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
