CPI(M) observes ‘black day’

HASSAN: The district unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) observed “black day” here on Saturday by hoisting a black flag at the Hemavathi statue.

This is part of the party’s nationwide agitation against the United Progressive Alliance Government’s decision to sign the Indo-U.S. nuclear agreement despite stiff opposition. The party described the agreement as a “black nuclear agreement” as it would have “nothing but disastrous consequences”.

Addressing agitators, party secretary Dharmesh said the party had appealed to the Prime Minister not to sign the agreement as it would result in complete surrender to the U.S. The U.S. had also clearly stipulated that India did not have a guaranteed fuel supply assurance. Mr. Dharmesh said there was no transparency in the agreement and alleged that the Prime Minister had “sold” the country to the U.S.

He said when Manmohan Singh was the Union Finance Minister, he started implementing economic policies at the directions of the World Bank. Then too the Left parties had cautioned him against such “reforms”. But he turned a blind eye to their advice. As a result of these measures, more than 1.65 lakh farmers had committed suicide. Unemployment, inflation and corruption were on the rise. He accused the Congress of “taking the country for a solid ride”.

On the reports of further attacks against Christians in Orissa, Mr. Dharmesh said the CPI(M) had demanded that all cases be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation and sought quick punishment of those responsible.
