‘Don’t adjust crop insurance against loan waiver amount’

HOLEMANNUR (GADAG District): Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa said on Saturday that he would immediately issue orders directing the officials not to adjust the crop insurance compensation against loan waiver amount.

He was addressing a public meeting after laying the foundation stone for a rehabilitation project for the people affected by floods at Hole Mannur village in Ron taluk of Gadag district.

The Chief Minister’s promise came in response to a plea by his parliamentary secretary and MLA C.C. Patil on the move by the officials of adjusting the crop insurance compensation against loan waiver amount, which he stated had nullified the relief given by the State Government to farmers through the loan waiver scheme.

The Chief Minister said that it was duty of the Government to provide relief to the people affected by natural calamities.

He would direct the officials not to strictly adhere to the cost factor when rehabilitating the affected people. The State Government was ready to enhance the monetary assistance to the project, he added.

He said that he was aware of the plight of the people who had been residing in temporary sheds for the past one year and efforts would be made to provide relief to them at the earliest.

On the rehabilitation of people of nine other villages in the district, he appealed to them to give their consent to proposals in this regard by adopting resolutions in gram sabhas.

Referring to a proposal to divert water from the Tuppiri Halla to the Malaprabha reservoir by constructing a barrage near Uppina Betageri, he said the Government would look into it and take action. The project would provide 2.5 tmcft of water to the Malaprabha reservoir, which would help in providing water to Hubli and Dharwad. It would also help in preventing floods in the villages on the banks of the Tupiri Halla and Benni Halla.

Welcoming the gathering, Mr. C.C. Patil said that 32 villages in the district had been affected by the floods and it had been proposed to shift 11 villages.

Ministers Karunakar Reddy and C.M. Udasi, and Regional Commissioner Amita Prasad were present.

The Chief Minister’s programme was cut short as it began one hour behind schedule.

The ‘Janaspandana’ programme was reduced to just receiving a few memoranda from the displaced people.
