Church to intensify agitation

Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: The Alappuzha diocese of the Latin Catholic Church, which has been conducting a relay satyagraha in front of the District Collectorate for the last 17 days demanding speedy implementation of the tsunami rehabilitation package, has decided to intensify the agitation.

According to P.J. Mathew, convener of the Coastal Development Action Committee, a frontal organisation of the diocese, meetings were being organised in all churches under the diocese in the district on Saturday and Sunday to discuss the future course of action.

The diocese has been staging a relay satyagraha in front of the Collectorate since September 17 demanding rehabilitation of the tsunami-affected on the coastal belt of Alappuzha, construction of a seawall to help the coast resist regular tidal wave attacks and sea erosion threats, supply of drinking water, power supply, development of a coastal highway, upgradation of primary health centres on the coast into fully-equipped hospitals and distribution of tsunami scholarships to children of tsunami-affected families.
